Hey, I am a self-admitted noob, so new I do'nt even have the game yet. I am getting it this week. Can someone tell me a good place to start to learn about it. I am readign the posts on this web page but right now I have no knowledge base to start from, so its all confusing. I am told the game is sort of like Diablo 2 meets Everquest. Is this true?

Alos, how varied are the ages of people playing? Is it all kids, or are there adults also.

Look forward to playing.

Young at heart and old of age here.

I played pong, and will continue to be a gamer for a long time to come.

Ditto

For me the best way to begin the learning process was to load the game make a character and start playing. It's only a game and you can always start over

Default Great answers!!

I owned original Colecovision, that should be a hint, lol. Can you comment on the Diablo meets Everquest comparision. That was the sellign point for me. Diablo II was one of my all time favorites, and I always respected the format of Everquest. To combine the two sounded cool as hell.

Well, I was a heavy player of d2 for years, it would always draw me back at some point.

Until I saw guildwars, now I don't see any turning back, the game is really NOTHING like d2 in my opinion, superbly better graphics, more indepth, you don't have to grind for levels, do you remember hitting level 90 on d2? After that it was like omg, how much until next level?

You really don't have any item that I would consider "godly" which I think throws off a lot of people, this game to me is about your skill not how much you can attain as far as items would go but we will have to wait and see what is ahead of us in the next chapter in '06.

Another nice thing is you have no worries about "pk" players hostiling you while out on your adventure, however you may find yourself wishing you could hostile some of your team mates once in a while for pulling a "Leroy"

The game shouldn't be but has also become about "bling bling", which I have to admit my mesmer looks totally awesome in her 15k noble armor, it is no better than armor costing a fraction of the amount I paid, but I also know what it took for me to get her there and that is the reward that I gave her/myself for the accomplishment.

Support... I can't tell you how much it is appreciated. When was the last time you saw a rep from a company come into common town area and say hi, even ask about suggestions or troubles or be there for the launch of a contest the way she did with the gvg tournament recently.

Biggest favor you can do is with your first character, play the game through, follow each mission and don't get ran places right off otherwise you stand to miss a lot of the storyline. Save the running for the first time you meet a group of charr, you will understand this soon enough.

But by all means, have fun!

Welcome to the world of Tyria and welcome to Guildwars

I've used dos, windows 3.11 and had a vic 20, played the original Dragon Warrior / Legend of Zelda / Final Fantasy for Nintendo as a kid

This game is hard to describe, that is a good comparison. It designed that you can do PvE (quests, missions, follow the plot) with other players or NPC's for the most part. PvP allow you to to direct group fights against other teams.

The game is more off of skill > time played. Example in PvE lvl 20 is the max you will ever get and if you do all the quests to the point, you will be lvl 20 1/2 through the game.

Among you two jobs you will have over 150 skills (once you have them unlocked /acquired them) powered by 7 attributes but can only have 8 available to you at one time. You can change your attributes and skills selection at any time in towns.

You can create a lvl 1 character and start the game in PvE and do PvP or make a pre-made lvl 20 character and just do PvP.

Anti-grind MMORPH things in GW: instant warp travel to any town you've been town via world map. Everyone plays on the same server. You have "mirrors" of each town and you can meet with some even if there on the Europe or Koren Servers via the international district. When you go on a quest / mission / explore zone, only "your" party is there, no other players. Temp death penalties. When you die you get a temp death penalty that goes away if you warp back to a town or it gets worked off by killing monsters that give you xp. You can party with a level 1 character and they get full xp where you get 0 xp if the monster is too low.

Other people can do better description about PvP, I do mostly PvE so not a good source for PvP other then the basics.

Best is to jump in and take your time, don't be afraid to ask questions, don't be afraid if someone calls you a noob, just ignore them.

is 30 old? well i don't care. i also work a lot so i knew i only had time for one game. so i did some research, and what captured my interest was the concept of real time combat tactics, that was so lacking for me in diablo (killing everything the same way purely because you leveled up and not made stupid build mistakes). and don't get me wrong, diablo is an awesome game.

this game is so complex, some people might even compare it to chess. there are near endless ways to fight an enemy it's sometimes too much. i find once i reached a certain level (yes, even some later pve stuff), i can't turn my mind off and win.

what i miss in this game is the magic, the feel of the world. i didn't get scared like my first few days with doom. i didn't get excited about finishing the game like i did when i finished diablo 1.

or maybe 30 is old after all. maybe i'm still addicted to guild wars (despite all this mini-rant), because i found that once you think you finished the game, you've only began learning how to play it.

one more thing (this came out longer than i thought): i really don't want to start a "guild wars vs. x" debate, this is just my personal experience with this game. And new guy: they said it, buy the game and start playing. it's the best way to learn.

If you want to read up on the game before you get it, some of the generalized guides at http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/dos...me/914653.html contain some general information it's nice to know before hand (how skills work, how attributes work, how armor works, etc.). After you know the basics I recommend reading some of the class-specific guides and thinking about what combination might suit your preferred style of play the best.

Well, your doing well so far because...

The first step is admiting you have a problem, YOUR A NOOB!
Repeat after me:: "Hello, my name is XXXX, i am a noob."

Lol, just kidding ya. but in all seriousness im a twenty something gamer, also with gaming history up my wazoo. Also played d2 heavily for for the previous 4 yrs until last year, and then i picked GW up. In short, the game is highly complex, yet very simple at the same time. Easy learning curve, but unending combinations of what to do = the complexity. Like they all said, best is to load the game up and just start playing. As you play through and encounter random people, you can easily observe and ask when you get lost.

Im glad to see my age range (+/- 10 yrs) like many that have replied here, are still avid gamers. Also, Fyi get hooked up with ANY random guild ASAP. It will offer a free wealth of info if they are helpful and that will help u learn fast. Dunt worry you can find a great community guild when your rdy!

WOW! sorry that was so long. kidna rantish, but hope all that jibberish helpd at all! Enjoy Guild Wars, and as someone already said... remember to RUN RUN RUN when you see a giant horde of Charr!!! (you'll understand soon.)

Just make a character and play through...Theres nothing telling you that you have to be the most ownage character coming out the door..

When you've run a few characters through the game, thus amassing alittle wealth, and information - Then tackle the projects you see on the forum here.

Until then Don't try to push yourself to being that lvl5 in the best armor in the game, it aint going to happen (thats a person that has made the money on a lvl20 character of their's most of the time). You aren't going to start out with enough money and crafting materals to do that.

Just remember to know your role so you can breeze through the game smoother.

well, best thing I can suggest, is read up on the differences between the professions. Decide which sounds most fun. Then when you get the game, make that profession, and spend absolutely ages exploring the first area (don't accept anything that says 'go to the academy'!). It will help you get used to the controls, the skills, the interface,a nd your character. And if it turns out you don't like the one you chose, you won't lose a lot of progress if you start over
